BRAEMAR in Lisbon 2009-07-21

The cruise ship BRAEMAR called in Lisbon on 21 July 2009 when I took several photographs of her while docking at the Rocha Passenger Ship Terminal at about 9h20 AM.
A member of the Fred. Olsen cruise ships fleet since 2001, the BRAEMAR was rebuilt in Hamburg in May and June 2008 and her hull was enlarged with a new 31-meters section increasing gross tonnage to 24.344 GT from original 19.089 grt.
She was the second of two sisters built in Spain in 1992-93 for Crown Cruise Line as CROWN DINASTY (1993-1997) and sailed also with the following names: CROWN MAJESTY (1997), NORWEGIAN MAJESTY (1997-1999), again CROWN MAJESTY (1999-2001).

HANSEATIC of 1958

As after WW2 the Hamburg based HAPAG company did not resume transatlantic passenger ship services, the gap was filled by several foreign operators, including Home Lines which in 1958 was behind the purchase of EMPRESS OF SCOTLAND and the establishment of German Atlantic Lines. After rebuilding the old EMPRESS became the handsome HANSEATIC in July 1958.
As a cruise ship this ship visited Lisbon several times. She had a fire in New York in 7 September 1957 and was sld t be broken up in Hamburg the following December.

CAP ARCONA TO RIO

In a forgotten shipping office at the waterfront of Recife, the former Pernambuco, I saw recently an original version of this poster framed on the wall as if tickets were still available for the next CAP ARCONA crossing from Rio de Janeiro to Lisbon.
What a beautiful ship she was. Between 1927 and 1939 this ship was one of the very best ways to sail down to Rio de Janeiro. In those times there were also the Royal Mail "white and gold steamers", the Cie. Sud Autlantique liners from Bordeaux and Lisbon as well as the Italia Line passenger ships. So many ships to choose from in Lisbon in the 1930s...

CAP ARCONA of 1927

One of the more famous passenger liners in the fleet of Hamburg Sud and the German Merchant Marine, the magnificent CAP ARCONA was a frequent visitor to the port of Lisbon during the three funneled liner relatively short career.
CAP ARCONA was employed on the Hamburg - Lisbon - Rio de Janeiro - Buenos Aires service from November 1927 (she left Hamburg on maiden voyage on 19 November 1927) up to August 1939 when she was withdrawn from service due to the outbreak of the Second World War. Her end was tragic in the frozen waters of Lubeck bay on 3 May 1945 when CAP ARCONA was bombed and sunk by the RAF - Royal Air Force with thousands of refugees onboard, of whom 5,000 lost their lives. Drole de Guerre...

KUNGSHOLM of 1966 revisited

The passenger ship OCEANIC II, ex-MONA LISA, ex- VICTORIA, ex-SEA PRINCESS ex-KUNGSHOLM of 1966 has just visited Lisbon between 13 and 19 September 2007 on her first SCOLAR SHIP voyage with students. The ship is scheduled to return to Lisbon next year in April and September.
Although the refit made in Bremen in 1979 when she was purchased by P&O did in fact spoil the KUNGSHOLM original handsome look, she is still a very interesting example of fine passenger ship architecture of the 1960, as can be stated on the photos published in this post obtained in Lisbon on 2007-09-19.

CRYSTAL SIMPHONY in Lisbon 2007-05-07

The CRYSTAL SERENITY sailing from the Santa Apolónia cruise terminal in Lisbon on 7th May 2007. This terminal is situated in front of the Santa Apolónia railway station exactly where the old COMPANHIA NACIONAL DE NAVEGAÇÃO (CNN) had its dock until 1985. This terminal is particularly charming with the old quarter of Alfama at walking distance.

The CORAL leaving Lisbon 24-03-2007

The CORAL leaving Lisbon on 24 MARCH 2007. Photographs taken from the sailing cruise ship PRINCIPE PERFEITO by Luís Miguel Correia. Also the same ship photographed 31 years ago in her original form as the CUNARD ADVENTURER.

The CORAL in Lisbon 24-03-2007

The cruise ship CORAL berthed at the Rocha cruise terminal, in Lisbon, on Saturday 24 March 2007. This nice looking cruise ship was built in the Netherlands in 1971 as CUNARD ADVENTURER for the Cunard Line. In 1977 she was sold to NCL and renamed SUNWARD II.
At about this time her exterior looks were changed: the original QE2-style white funnel was replaced by two side by side funnels in order to match the looks of the other NCL cruise ships and the mast was also modified. Later the ship became the TRITON and operated as such for Epirotiki and Royal Olympic Cruises. Following the bankrupcy of ROC she was purchased by present owners Louis Cruises of Limassol, Cyprus.
As CUNARD ADVENTURER, she visited Lisbon in 1971 on her positioning cruise to the Caribbeans. Later she also called as the TRITON in Epirotiky livery, and in 2006 returned as the TRITON.

THE QE2 in Lisbon

It is hard to believe the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 has been calling in Lisbon for 38 years...
Here there are some photos of this majestic dual purpose Atlantic liner and cruise ship, sad to be the last of her kind when introduced in 1969...

CALYPSO ex-SOUTHERN CROSS in Lisbon

At the same time the more modern NORTHERN STAR was doing her final cruises, her former fleet mate and elder near sister CALYPSO ex-SOUTHERN CROSS returned to service as the Greek owned Thomson Cruises operated CALYPSO in June 1976. She was very successful and sailed for many years under several names, mostly in US waters until scrapped recently in the Far East...
Those photos were taken in Lisbon by L. M. Correia on CALYPSO's maiden cruise after rebuilding.

NORTHERN STAR IN LISBON

Shaw Savill Line flagship NORTHERN STAR of 1962 photographed in Lisbon by Luís Miguel Correia on her final season in June and October 1975.
The stern view shows her on the final cruise and the Soviet liner UKRAINA can be seen docked to NORTHERN STAR's bow. She was 13-year old when scrapped in Taiwan. Very sad end for a very fine and attractive liner.

P&O ARCADIA leaving LISBON

The Italian-built P&O cruise ship ARCADIA (laid down as QUEEN VICTORIA), leaving Lisbon (Santa Apolonia cruise terminal) on 4th October 2006 photographed by Luís Miguel Correia.
The light was not at its best, with clouds, but the sun did show for a few moments, thus the difference in light between the photos.
Since 1975, when I started photographing the passenger shipping scene in Lisbon regularly, this is the third different P&O ARCADIA I have been able to photograph... The first one was the John Brown-built ARCADIA of 1954, a very traditional post-war P&O liner. Later on I did also photograph the French-built ARCADIA ex-STAR PRINCESS, when she replaced the CANBERRA cruising out of Southampton, and now this elegant would be Cunarder.

MORE P&O cruise ships in Lisbon

The P&O cruise ships ARTEMIS and OCEANA photographed in Lisbon on 19 and 20 September 2006 by Luís Miguel Correia.

It is hard to realize that the ARTEMIS is now 22 year old specialy because it means that my tenth 5-year survey is due in a very short term. I can not blame, for it has been a life full of ships in all possible ways, and in a positive mood I look forward for the ships I'll be able to photograph over the next fifty years...

DELPHIN ex-BYELORUSSIYA of 1975

In February 1975 I started taking photographs to passengers ships in Lisbon and one of the first brand-new ships I was able to register in film was the BYELORUSSIYA. Thirty one years later she is still around and looking smart, as can be observed on the photos taken at Lisbon on 10 September 2006.
When introduced in early 1975 as the BYELORUSSIYA, the DELPHIN was the first of another series of Soviet passenger ships named after republics of the USSR. In the end five sister were built in Finland and they are all still in service.

The ASTORIA in Lisbon 22 July 2006

When the brand-new ASTOR was introduced in 1981 by HADAG of Hamburg she was one of the first newbuilding cruise ships starting a new generation of purpose built vessels giving new hope to passenger ship enthusiasts. So far she has had a long career under several operators and names, sailing now as the ASTORIA. The adjoining photos were taken in Lisbon on 22 July 2006 and the ship as berthed at the Alcântara terminal.

THE SAME SHIP - A DIFFERENT LOOK

THE SAME SHIP - A DIFFERENT LOOK

Some passenger ships look just like cats: they have seven lifes. One such example is the STOCKHOLM of 1948, still sailing as the ATHENA in Classic International Cruises livery. I first photographed her in Lisbon in the mid seventies when she used to cruise from Goteborg under charter to Stena Line as the VOLKERFEUNDSCHAFT. Here she is underway in the river Tagus in 1985 and again in Lisbon twenty years later as the rebuilt ATHENA.

THE SAGA RUBY arriving in LISBON

One of the main attractions on a cruise to Lisbon is the scennic viewing of the city and the river Tagus as seen from aboard the ships on their arrival.
A frequent visitor to Lisbon is SAGA HOLYDAYS' SAGA RUBY, depicted here in several photos taken by L. M. Correia on 4th May 2006.
The SAGA RUBY called Lisbon for the first time on 22nd September 1973 in her original form as Norwegian America Line VISTAFJORD.
After 33 years of continous cruise service she still looks a handsome ship and the present livery is particularly attractive.
From top to bottom: The SAGA RUBY has just embarked the harbour pilot off Algés, sails past the Belém Tower, upriver to pass under the Tagus bridge and dock at the nearby Alcântara cruise terminal

CRUISE SHIPS AND LISBON

The QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 leaving Lisbon on one of her frequent calls while cruising from Southampton
Copyright photo by Luís Miguel Correia

Lisbon is a major port for cruise ships with a long tradition in passenger shipping ever since the first great steamship companies were established in the eighteen thirties and forties with the purpose of mail and passengers transportation.

Household names in the early years of modern passenger steamship operations like the P&O - Peninsular & Oriental Steamship Co., or the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, were among the first to bring their passenger ships to Lisbon.

Nowadays the old traditions are renewed by visits of cruise ships to Lisbon in increasing numbers.

With this blog the Editor intends to publish news and images related to passenger and cruise ships in Lisbon over the years...
