CAP ARCONA of 1927


One of the more famous passenger liners in the fleet of Hamburg Sud and the German Merchant Marine, the magnificent CAP ARCONA was a frequent visitor to the port of Lisbon during the three funneled liner relatively short career.
CAP ARCONA was employed on the Hamburg - Lisbon - Rio de Janeiro - Buenos Aires service from November 1927 (she left Hamburg on maiden voyage on 19 November 1927) up to August 1939 when she was withdrawn from service due to the outbreak of the Second World War. Her end was tragic in the frozen waters of Lubeck bay on 3 May 1945 when CAP ARCONA was bombed and sunk by the RAF - Royal Air Force with thousands of refugees onboard, of whom 5,000 lost their lives.
